Willie
Gunn arrived on the outskirts of Edinburgh from the north of Scotland
in the 1780's. Arriving outside the Golf Tavern he stopped to watch
the red-coated golfers. One of them offered Willie a job as a caddie,at
the going rate of one shilling an hour. This seemed a fortune to
a poor Highlander.
Willie was an extremely likeable character and his services were
soon in great demand. Many of his clients gave him their cast off
clothes, and his fear of having them stolen meant that, in summer
and winter, he wore three layers one sewn inside the other. In 1820
Caddie Willie headed home, after having saved enough to give himself
a decent funeral. |
